Curly Tops
Another chocolate from my childhood. Actually, I think Ricoa’s ‘Curly Tops’ is older than me. My brother and I used to buy Curly Tops in boxes of 12 from the neighborhood sari-sari (variety) store. If our mother was feeling stingy, we would buy one box and split the contents equally between us–six apiece. If she was feeling generous, we would buy a box apiece. Whichever the case, eating Curly Tops was always, always an exciting event. And part of the thrill was in slowly peeling off the paper cups.
Back then, Curly Tops didn’t have flat tops like the ones you see in the photo. The tops were a swirl of chocolate–kinda gave one a feeling that the chocolate was ‘alive’ and in motion. That was what distinguished them from younger sibling ‘Flat Tops’, also by Ricoa. Flat Tops not only had flat tops, they had flat sides as well. I don’t know why Curly Tops have flat tops these days. In fact, if you buy individually wrapped Curly Tops in plastic bags, they look exactly like Flat Tops except for the different wrapping. The ones in boxes are creamier and more chocolatey but also cost more. Still cheap though compared to imported chocolates.
