Frog legs and quail eggs adobo
We haven’t shopped at the Shangri-La Plaza in years and, my, how it has changed. We were there last Sunday and some of the shops and food stalls I frequented were no longer there. The Vietnamese restaurant at the food gallery has been replaced by something else. The Portuguese Egg Tart Factory stall had disappeared too. Anyhow, the trip wasn’t a total waste. We bought lots of books from Powerbooks and I was able to buy half a kilo of frozen frog legs from Rustan’s Supermarket. I’ve always wanted to try them having been told that the meat is very similar to chicken.

For my first frog legs adventure, I decided to be a little conservative. Nothing fancy since I didn’t want to get traumatized. To be more precise, I didn’t want to waste the frog legs–too expensive to experiment with. PhP 237.00 for a little over 500 grams isn’t exactly cheap. So, I decided to make an adobo dish out of them. To make the dish more colorful, I decided to throw in two dozens of quail eggs.

Pretty? Cooking them turned out to be a surprise.

hi there! how i love eating frogs! you are right they taste like chicken, even better. when i was a kid, my father, during rainy season, often goes to farm just to get frogs and i enjoy pealing off their skins with ashes. my father cooked them similar to chicken tinola with ampalaya leaves and it was great!!! hope i cud find some here in antipolo!
I’ve tried frog legs once. It was fried though. And yeah it somewhat tastes like chicken, at least I think its because of the similarity in texture.
BTW, how’s the meat? Was it dry after been cooked? Or tender? Cause one thing I dont like in adobo is some meat tend to get too dry after beeing cooked.
I havent been to Shang in a while too. Ill try out your recipe as soon as I get hold of some legs. LoL
oh, i love eating frog’s legs… it’s delicious, tastes like chicken! it’s available during rainy season in bulacan, my dad would cook it like chicken tinola, hmmmm! i miss the food… and my dad.

Elle and ulaparaw, the texture is similar to young chicken, but the meat is not as juicy. ulaparaw, my older girl enjoyed them, my 12-year-old refused to eat them, says they reminded her of the frog they dissected in school.

The frog legs we got here is smaller. yes it taste like more of chicken meat. I found your frog legs pieces are big like toads legs…
we live in hagonoy, bulacan… they’re available in the wet market or in some “talipapa”.
frog legs are really masarap! here in cavite we had a recipe for frog wherein we saute, garlic, onion, tomatoe and kamias, then add in the frog leg and add in water, level lang, then chopped “alagaw leaves” and we thicken it with bread crumbs or “biscotio”, this is really masarap.
I think I’ll stick to chicken kahit sabihin nilang lasang manok ang frog legs.
I really can’t make myself take those exotic foods. Even kuhol, dalag, hito, and yung nagustuhan mo – mata ng baka. Even deer, mutton (lamb is ok for me) and wild boar meats. Actually, inggit lang ako sa mga kayang -kayang kumain ng exotic dishes.
But then, there are also lots of people who can not eat crustaceans and shellfishes. Not for allergy or for health reasons but according to them, sea scavengers daw or visually, not edible in appearance.

I hope you know that the frogs that you eat have their upper bodies held down while their bottom half is cut. They are still conscious while this is done and death comes only about an hour later. It is unbelievably cruel and horribly painful for the frog. (Also, frogs eat flies. Killing frogs means an increase in flies which can drastically affect many villages and sometimes even become a health hazard)

Dear Connie, I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now and I must admit, I’ve become a fan of yours. You really put a lot of time and effort on your blog and for that, I am appreciative. However, I am truly disappointed and sad how you handled the views of Danielle et al. Yes, your blog is like your home and everyone who visits it should respect and observe proper decorum. Danielle et al merely expressed their views but I don’t think they disrespected you. I understand that they irritated you but why the invectives on your reply? Look Connie and all other readers who have responded to my views oh so maturely, I do not know of your culture. Nor do I know you. Therefore I have nothing to judge. All I know so far is your eating habits which include eating frog legs. It is a well-known fact in many countries that the way frog legs are obtained is cruel. I guess you could call not eating frog legs my culture and by telling me what I think is BS, or by calling me a “small nuisance”, you are actually disrespecting me and my culture when I, as I said, did not even imply that I thought there was anything wrong with your beliefs or your culture. I apologize if that was the impression you got but that was not what I said in any way. I do not understand the language in comment 30 but I can assume it is not very friendly as your whole approach to a differing opinion has been disgustingly rude. naalala ko nung bata pa ako, sa montalban, tito ko may hawak nung philippine bullfrogs association(di ko ma-recall exact name). nag-alaga sila ng bullfrogs as a food source. dahil nga totoy pako nun, natandaan ko lang nun yung dami ng bullfrogs dun sa farm at ang lalaki nila. although di ako nakatikim nung bullfrogs, ang naalala ko lang para talaga silang manok pag binalatan. yung itsura kasi pareho halos.
nakatikim lang ako ng palaka nung medyo malaki nako. sa mga pinsan ko sa bulacan…hagonoy bulacan. dun kasi ang side ng nanay ko. amuse nga ako sa comments nung nabasa ko na may mga taga-hagonoy dito. pati pala si Connie may family dun. pag bumibisita kami dun, sa san nicholas kami nag stay. andun kasi mostly mga kapatid ng nanay ko. pero kalat mga kamaganak namin dun. meron san sebastian, santo nino, etc. namiss ko tuloy yun lugar. pag andun kasi kami, bine-beybi ako ng mga pinsan ko dahil mas matatanda sakin.
anyway, tungkol sa frog legs, masarap naman sya. may point nga yung sabing lasang manok din.
sa ngayon may mga nakikita ako sa palengke ng mga frog legs pero since hindi ko naman talaga hinahanap, or hindi naman kumakain ng ganun misis ko, hindi ko na lang binibili. frozen din sya sa chinese supermarkets.
reaction ko lang sa ibang nag-comment against sa pag consume ng frog legs na hindi dito ang tamang lugar para sa ganyan. may kanya-kanyang choice tayo, hindi tayo pare-pareho. kung ayaw nyo ng ganun, hindi ibig sabihin ayaw na rin ng iba. kanya kanyang opinyon pero hindi to ang lugar. kung magpopost para lang maging aware ang iba sa beliefs nila, wag na dito at siguro hindi na kailangan. madali naman mahagilap ang info sa net eh.
