Go Nuts Donuts and Gerry’s Grill
Summer in the Philippines is kite-flying season. For years, my husband and I have been taking our kids kite-flying on weekends. The usual venue had always been U.P. Diliman. Sometimes, we would go all the way to U.P. Los Ba–os. The Los Ba–os trips were always fueled by the thought of enjoying fresh milk and white cheese at the DTRI Dairy Bar and the pastillas on the way home. It was during those numerous trips to Los Ba–os that we bought most of the plants that are now blooming in our front and backyards.
Last Saturday was the first Saturday of March which is officially the beginning of summer. For the first time, we went kite-flying with friends. Four families, to be precise. But we didnÕt go to Los Ba–os. We went somewhere nearer. To The Fort in Makati City. The Fort is, of course, was used to be Fort Bonifacio and which is now known as Global City–a military fort turned high-end residential, commercial and industrial community. While most of the 203 hectare area is still under construction, a lot of empty grassy fields remain. It is a haven for kite-flyers as well as hobbyists flying remote-controlled planes. The reason for the choice of venue was Go Nuts Donuts. We sampled them recently at a friendÕs house and we all wanted our families to try them. There is only one Go Nuts Donuts outlet and it happens to be located at The Fort. And so we went kite-flying. We hadnÕt been there 15 minutes when one of the mommies suggested we go for the donuts. Three of us crossed the empty field to the shops. We already knew that the queue would be long. We had been warned that it took an average of 40 minutes, standing in the queue, to buy the donuts. And each individual cannot buy more than three dozens of donuts at any single time. We were prepared to brave the queue. But the sight that confronted us was too much. The queue was long and winding. Perhaps later, we said.
Two mommies, excluding me (I have no patience with queues), went. They could buy two boxes each and each family would have a dozen donuts. Not that we were intended to eat them all right there since we were planning on having dinner at GerryÕs Grill. A friendÕs treat for winning the Òsalesman of the yearÓ award. Buying the donuts took an hour. It was getting too dark to fly kites and we all wanted to proceed to GerryÕs Grill. We advised th kids not to gorge on the donuts since we would have dinner in a little bit. But they were hungry. My daughters had one each. Turned out that the snack was not a bad idea at all. Despite the 7.30 p.m. reservation, we had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated. There was some conference earlier that broke up late and everything had to be cleaned up and arranged for the diners. We were starving by the time we are seated. I would have taken photos of the dinner courses (green mango salad, sinigang na baboy, seafood rice, grilled chicken, crispy pata, sinugba kilawin, kangkong topped with crushed chicharon, grilled squids and bottomless pink lemonade) but as each dish was served, everyone was all over it. Too hungry, like I said.
Great dinner at GerryÕs Grill, as always. Though the waiting was a bummer. We didnÕt have to do that on previous visits. But then we hadnÕt gone there on a Saturday night before.
Go Nuts Donuts rating: The donuts are great but a little expensive.
Gerry’s Grill (Libis branch) rating: Food great, price okay, but we had to wait that long despite the reservation. My, bad.
