Kecap Manis

Kecap Manis is a thick and syrupy sweet soy sauce that comes from Indonesia (the salty soy sauce is called Kecap asin). Sweetened with palm sugar and flavored with star anise and other Oriental spices, its flavor is more complex than ordinary soy sauce. It’s great as a dipping sauce but works equally well as a marinade.
See my sukiyaki-cut beef with kecap manis recipe.

Where can you find Kecap Manis?
Sounds yummy. I think my kids and husband would love it if they try it.
By the way, I also made a discovery. A thick sweet soy sauce from China. “Kimlan Soy Paste.” It is both salty and sweet. I substituted it in recipes that call for soy sauce, sugar and cornstarch and water combination. It can be bought around Chinese stores in San Juan. “Wei Wang”, and “Little Stores”. I recently used it in a recipe with vegetables using only oyster sauce and soy paste. It was also yummy.
Katherine, you’ll find Kecap Manis in the bigger supermarkets. Unimart, Landmark…
I bought a bottle of Kecap Manis last weekend in the hope of making better-tasting Asian food. Thanks for the inspiration!
