Mussel soup with coconut milk

My 16-year-old daughter, Sam, adores mussels any way they’re cooked. But her 14-year-old sister does not touch mussels unless they were baked and topped with cheese. Until tonight. Oh, how she feasted on this soup! And she’s not even a fan of spicy dishes.
It’s a Thai dish1 but the similarity to the most common Filipino mussel soup is uncanny. You have the usual spices and aromatics like ginger and garlic but this Thai soup has a rich broth that is basically the natural juices of the mussels thickened with coconut milk. It’s spicier too with the inclusion of chili peppers among the ingredients.

Medyo nakakalito yun lime minsan. Here in Singapore, akala mo naman yun calamansi dito ay green lemon sa isang popular supermarket dito. Sa isa naman store green orange at sa isa naman young lemon-lime.
this is a nice variation… ang alam ko lang na pagsoup nito is guisado with 7up and a little salt… hehehe! ma-try nga… thanks for the recipe ms connie..
Wow pede pala lagyan ng coconut milk
masubukan nga! bagong panlasa Here they eat mussels partner ay french fries. sarap sarap!! Bon appetit!!
Arden, ganun din dito. We have “native lemon” that looks like lime but isn’t lime.
Connie, what happened to the lemon grass???
Hi! What are bird’s eye chilis (any local name?) I really like your site – very helpful and informative. I’ve actually tried a number of your recipes with encouraging feedback from my family. Nice work and more power!
Alma, lemon grass?
May, siling labuyo.
A gay friend of mine introduced to me a dish he naughtily calls “ang tahong ni joseph”. He added to the tahong, squid ang bagoong and, bicolanos that we are, cooked them in gata with siling labuyo.
It is always a hit with my friends and relatives, as I’m sure this dish of yours will be.
Another great dish! This is something I am going to try— hehehe— mukhang mapapalaban ka pati sa pagkain ng rice nito di ba?
Wow…that does seem like it would be spicy! I think I will try a wimped-out version first
soloops, naku, if only I weren’t allergic to bagoong, I’d try that too.
Crisma, actually, pinapak namin hahahaha
Erik, by Thai standards, this is a wimpy version already.
TSARAAAPPP! I never knew that it would taste that gooood… Try ko magluto uli for my parents if ever i go home… ***himas himas tyan*** **burp** LOLZ!
My husband cooked this recipe last night and it was awesome! We never thought coconut milk would go well with the mussel soup… LOVED IT!
masarap. super easy, super fast, and super cheap… only 35 php per kilo for the muscles. a wonderful budget dinner with some toasted bread.
Cooked it last night and it was wonderful. I added long beans. Ang sarap sa kanin at madali rin lutuin. Will be making this again! Thanks for the recipe Connie!
