Pizza pan de sal
November 19, 2009 • Hello. I am currently out of the country and unable to respond to comments and e-mails. Rest assured, however, that future posts have been scheduled so new recipes will go live almost everyday during my absence. I'll be back soon with lots of stories and photos. Ciao for now! ~ ConnieIn the Glad bakeware entry, I mentioned that I made some baked macaroni which my daughter brought to the class Christmas party. What I didn’t mention was that I stayed up all night to make sure that the baked mac would be ready when she left for school yesterday morning. More importantly, I wanted the baked mac to have cooled a bit before fitting the cover on the baking dish. As a result, by the time the sauce was done, I felt famished. So, there I was at 3.30 a.m. feasting on pizza pan de sal.

This is such a simple snack to make (a heavy one though) and kids love it. Had my daughters been awake at that ungodly hour, I’m sure they would have shared the pizza pan de sal with me.
Ingredients :
pan de sal, split in halves
2 tbsps. of pasta sauce for every half-piece of pan de sal
chopped onions, optional
chopped bell peppers, optional
grated cheese
Assembling the pizza pan de sal:
I don’t recommend ready-to-pour pasta sauce in pouches. If you don’t have a tried and tested pasta sauce, you may this or this.
I don’t recommend either that you go through all the trouble of cooking a pot of pasta sauce just so you make make some pizza pan de sal. When you make pasta sauce, make a lot and set aside some to make pizza pan de sal.
Chopped onions and bell peppers are optional because home made pasta sauce has enough onions and bell peppers. Add them only if you want some crunch in your pizza pan de sal.
Toast the split pan de sal in the oven for about two minutes. You have to pre-toast the bread so that they form a crust on the surface. Remember that unlike uncooked pizza crust, you are using ready-to-eat bread. Unless you toast the pan de sal, they will get soaked with pasta sauce and they will turn soggy and difficult to handle.
When you’ve toasted your pan de sal, spread the pasta sauce over them. Top with chopped onions and bell peppers, if you prefer, then add the grated cheese on top. Toast for another minute or just until the cheese melts.
Eat as soon as they are cool enough to handle so as not to burn your hands and mouth.

Good idea to make extra pasta sauce for making pizza. I never thought of it, and I make red pasta sauce each week. Thanks. My dad is going to like it.
Hahahha, and I thought I was the only one using Pandesal this way. After a friend tod me using long french baguettes for pizza crust, I substituted Pandesal instead which was a hit in my family. Sometimes if I have the huge size pandesal, I slice them into 3 and use a bottle pizza sauce and slice italian bacon for topping. And when I am lucky to have Eden cheese (here in Houston sometimes some Filipino sells them), I topped my pandesal with it. Yummy, I might do it today using mozzarella cheese instead (naubusan na kasi ako ng Eden cheese).
Sarap naman ng midnight snack mo. I remember my kuya doing the same to day old slice bread. Perfect with an ice cold coke!
Merry Christmas to you Connie and to your family. May you have a wonderful and blessed New Year too.
Gay, I often make twice as much pasta sauce each time. Tightly covered, it keeps well in the freezer. My younger daughter kasi is such a red pasta sauce fiend.
Ebba, re French bread: kasi when toasted twice parang masyado na sya matigas kaya mas ok pag pan de sal, di ba?
brenda, actually, most kinds of bread can be used. Even whole wheat bread in fact. But the best, so far, was onion bread which used to be available from Julie’s bakeshop. The line was discontinued, too bad.
teehee.. i do this as well when i have leftover bolognese sauce…i add more frankfurters and the veg… pag may peperoni, mas masarap.. haaayyy i love pizza and pasta dishes.. lol
Ms. Connie pag french bread ang ginamit ko, di-ko na pre-toast yung tinapay kasi tumpak ka, masyadong matigas. Yesterday ang ginamit ng husband ko eh sourdough bread which pre-sliced na from a Organic Store, medio matigas din yung hindi na-cover’an ng sauce, but it came out yummy. Toppings was just 2 kinds of cheeses and some Marinara sauce.
God Bless You Ms. Connie for maintaining such a food blog, may your family have a continous blessings for the coming 2008.
Must be yummy with our pan de sal, Connie, but I find the ones we buy here quite cakey. I’ve tried it with English muffins and it was just okay, but using onion bread, as you suggested, sounds good to me. I’ll surely try it. Thanks for another neat idea.
I wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Ms Connie,
Try it also with halved bagels. Actually, my commercial product dito sa US na called Bagel Bites, mini bagel pizzas. Patok sa mga bulilit at feeling bulilit like me.
Naku po, di MY (di po ako ganun kaswerte to have my own product) kung hindi MAY as in meron. Sorry po sa typo.
