Silicone baking pans
As I try to decide whether or not to bake today the rum cake that I had been itching to do for months, let me post some photos of some of the baking utensils I use in my kitchen. Reader Lemon in the mango and jelly dessert comment thread would like to know what a tube pan is. So does Yuga who is now posting recipes in his blog.

Above is my silicone bundt pan. A tube pan looks the same except that the sides are plain rather than ribbed. American and European brands of silicone bundt pan cost around PhP 1,200.00. I bought mine from the basement of the SM department store at Megamall. It cost PhP 700.00, made in China. I also bought a new set of piping bag with decorator tips after our cheap piping bag split open while my daughter Sam was making some churros.

Above, the round blue cake pan.
(Insert: So as not to mislead, this blue round pan was bought from Japan Home where all items cost PhP 88.00. I haven’t used this pan though. Compared to the red tube pan, the material of this round pan is definitely thinner.)
So, what’s so special about silicone bakeware apart from being expensive? They’re non-stick, rustproof and removing the cake from the pan couldn’t be easier. I really love them; so do my kids. If the weather gets a little more cooperative, I’ll bake a rum cake today.

That sort of makes me reconsider whether I should still get the 90 peso sil. pans from Japan Home.
Are they microwave safe?
Gaby, the round blue cake pan was from Japan Home. Haven’t used it though. Compared to the one I bought from SM, the one from Japan Home was thin.
Didn’t check for microwavability. We ditched our microwave oven a couple of years ago.
I didn’t know those silicon cookware are that expensive. you have many great recipe in here, i’m going to start searching for the best pinoy food recipe.
off topic — i don’t care much for microwave ovens also. in fact, i don’t have a use for them because one, i hate and don’t eat leftovers, and two, i don’t use it for cooking. but hubby who cannot live with one insists we have to have two in the house because one, he loooves leftovers, and two, it’s for those times he just have to have those soft and chewy Keebler cookies nuked for 20 seconds.

naku, purplegirl, i feel the same way about microwave ovens. we used to have large one which just rusted away until we disposed of it when we had the kitchen wing constructed–gave it away to one of the construction workers, literally. i only tried cooking with the microwave once, found it a lousy experience. i think the microwave was invented for frozen TV dinners which we don’t buy and eat anyway.

there’s an ‘everything 88′ store inside DIY store in Gateway Mall. i’m having second thoughts on purchasing that as well…. btw, they have muffin pans, round cake pans and tube pans.

The only silicon utensil I have is a spatula (he he). I might start buying some if I start baking again.
Anyway, for those in the Alabang area, there’s a Japanese store in ATC (near National Bookstore) and there’s one in Festival (near Shopwise). Found some usefull items there too.
ah! so thats how the silicone-tube pan looks like. do they have moulds for muffins too? and ms. connie can you share with me how to make churros? i thick it would go best with my mocha granita this weekend for afternoon refreshment.

I ‘m just curious with these silicon pans. I have seen this type at one of the malls here and they’re only 6euro-that’s around 400pesos – do you think that’s cheap? I’d like to buy the round,square ones plus the muffin type.

Maris, that’s cheap for European brands. The German brands are especially expensive. Japanese brands though are much cheaper.
Hi i just discovered your site and there’s so much yummy looking recipe’s i cant wait to try. i want to learn how to make refrigerator cakes though.. is there a recipe you could recommend? something i can coat with a mirror glaze to make it look classy for a valentines gift got my boyfriend.
