Some stuff for the kitchen
I’m having very, very bad internet problems as a result of the Taiwan earthquake. I’m supposed to post an entry about some of the food gifts I received for Christmas but uploading photos (it’s a photo intensive entry) is turning out to be a major issue so let me post this entry first.
An aborted trip to Hidalgo Street in Quiapo, Manila for some new camera lenses became a trip to the mall and shopping galore for kitchen stuff. My husband bought the bamboo steamers and a marinade injector for me and I bought a roasting pan so as not to experience a repeat of the Christmas Eve roast duckling disaster. I also bought a couple of loose-bottom pans for baking pies… told you I’m serious about learning how to bake, so, I’m investing on the right tools and gadgets. Next on the list is a set of springform pans and a stand mixer so that my trusty hand-held mixer can finally go on retirement. It’s actually older than my 14-year-old daughter. Imagine that! Anyway…

The bamboo steamers looks so sophisticated! I haven’t seen anything like that here in Melbourne. I’ve only ever seen the pure bamboo kind with no metal lining =)
saan po sa hidalgo niyo nabili ng mga ito?
Hi Ms. Connie!
Thanks for sharing your website, isa na ako sa nasisiyahan magbasa sa mga posts.
May I know where you bought the bamboo steamer and the roasting pan?
Wishing you and your family all the best in 2007 and in the years to come.
Marinade injector? Hmmm…sounds like something i could use. Where is that available? Merry Christmas Connie!
Hi Connie,
I enjoy reading your articles. I have a question regarding bamboo steamers, does the bamboo impart any flavor to the food? I had read a review of a bamboo steamer that mentioned something about the food having an off taste because of the bamboo. I have thinking of purchasing one, but changed my mind after reading that review. What is your experience with this? Thank you for all your expertise!
Sandra
Ellen, it’s my first time to see metal reinforced bamboo steamers too. Hope the metal makes it retain its shape longer.
Carl, the trip to Hildalgo was aborted because it was late already and I’ve been told that the photo supplies stores there close at around 5. We went to Megamall instead.
Grace and peterb, holiday greetings too! Bought them at Cooks Exchange, SM Megamall.
Sandra, aroma yes but flavor I don’t know. If it does, it makes the food better because Chinese dim sum tastes different (and the texture is different too) unless steamed in bamboo steamers. Considering that bamboo shoots are edible (a delicacy even for non Asians), if the bamboo steamers impart flavor to the food, well, it must be a good thing.
hi Connie,
Thanks for the tip about the bamboo steamers. Photos are great. Wishing you and your family a prosperous new year!
You’re welcome, Joe. Happy new year too!
Hi Connie,
Now THAT’s a steamer! Showed it to my husband and he’s impressed as well. I’d like one of those. Too bad we can’t get that kind here. My hubby prefers our bamboo steamer over the metal ones as well for steaming veggies, siopao, siomai and of course, leche flan (he got me two llaneras for that authentic Filipino look). When it started to disintegrate, I had to use kitchen twine to hold it together as I didnt have time to run out and get another one. Nah, I’m just too cheap to buy a new one. Hehehe. Anyway, have a happy new year and thank you for this wonderful site. Cheers!
Thanks Connie for the feedback, I used to buy some cooking stuff at Cooks-Megamall. Nasa Makati na kasi’y ako kaya di ko na napupuntahan. After the holidays, papasyal ako doon.
Greetings of peace, good health and prosperity this coming New Year!
nice stuff… good luck to your baking. hope i can start with mine too. oh, that tsunami threat – we live only a few hundred meters away from the beach here in dagupan city. when i heard of the tsunami warning, i asked my son to unlock the passage leading to the rooftop, just in case…
Happy new year, Cel! Perhaps, when you visit the Philippines, you can buy your steamer here.
Grace, Cooks Exchange seem to have the most complete supply of cooking and baking equipment. Such a small store but the goods are very well chosen. Happy new year to you too!
Rhodora, one thing about living in the boondocks — I don’t think the tsunami can reach us. But the thought of possible deaths is really scary.
hi connie, pardon my ignorance, but how do you use a bamboo steamer? do you need to place it on top of a kawali with water? gosh i’m so clueless on this…
also, how much are the steamer and the roasting pan if you don’t mind?
cynee, check the photo in my puto entry.
Hi,
Where in Manila can I look, purchase kitchen equipments and utensils for a commercial kitchen?
Thanks and regards.
