Spamjam? Oh, well…

I have lots of cookbooks. I buy them to get ideas. Very rarely do I cook a dish exactly as it appears in a cookbook recipe for two reasons : 1) ingredients in foreign cookbooks are not always available locally or, if they are, they are too damn expensive; and 2) there’s no challenge unless I make some innovations. One of those cookbooks is called Great-tasting Recipes with SPAM. My husband, who grew up with a steady supply of SPAM in their household, cajoled me into buying it about three years ago. To this day, I’ve never cooked anything from it. The book still looks brand new although I’ve had it for sometime now. SPAM is relatively expensive in the Philippines. My husband would buy a can or two occasionally. According to my taste buds, even the “lite” version is too salty. And regular SPAM is just too oily. Plus, I am not exactly into canned meat. I prefer fresh meat. The only canned meat we keep a steady supply of is corned beef. And that’s because I find frozen corned beef too watery for imaginative cooking.

Anyway, I digress. It seems that someone has taken the idea of this SPAM cookbook a step further. A Filipino has opened a one-of-a-kind restaurant in Manila with a menu made up entirely of SPAM : “Spamburgers, Spam nuggets, Spam spaghetti, Caesar salad with Spam, Spam and eggs…” Well, almost. They serve hotdogs to non-SPAM lovers.

It’s called Spamjam. The owner is hoping to start a chain of Spamjams worldwide.

Innovative. Interesting. I’m sure my husband would love to try it. But, well, personally, it’s not for me.
